OEM and ODM Ribbon Development — Custom Construction Programs with IP Protection

Lude Ribbon supports OEM programs (your design, our manufacturing) and ODM programs (our design, your brand) for custom ribbon constructions. Engineering consultation, NDA, and exclusivity agreement are standard. Direct factory only — no intermediaries.

In-house engineering for custom constructions NDA standard — no IP exposure OEM exclusivity agreement available Up to 3 prototype rounds included Direct factory — no trading company intermediary
OEM vs ODM

Understanding the Difference Between OEM and ODM Ribbon Programs

Both models are available and supported with engineering resources and exclusivity documentation. The choice depends on whether you bring your own design or need us to develop the design for you.

OEM — Your Design, Our Manufacturing
  • You provide the design specification or reference
  • We manufacture exactly to your specification
  • You retain all IP rights to the design
  • We agree not to supply the same construction to competitors
  • NDA and exclusivity agreement are standard
  • Suitable for brands with existing design assets
ODM — Our Design, Your Brand
  • We develop the design from your brief and requirements
  • You select from developed options and brand the chosen design
  • Exclusivity terms available for the selected design
  • IP typically retained by factory unless purchased outright
  • Suitable for brands without in-house design capability
  • Development fee structure applies
Problem

Why OEM and ODM Programs Require Direct Factory Access

Trading companies cannot fulfill OEM and ODM ribbon programs. Here is why:

  • ⚙️
    Custom construction requires loom engineering

New weave constructions require loom setup, yarn specification, and production trial. A trading company doesn’t have looms. They can only order from what already exists in a factory catalog. Your OEM design only reaches production if you go directly to the factory that has the engineering capability.

  • 🔒
IP protection requires direct supplier agreement

A trading company supplies to multiple brands. They have no incentive or authority to prevent your design from appearing on a competitor’s product. An exclusivity agreement is only enforceable at the factory level — the entity that controls production.

  • 🔁
Development iteration requires direct engineering communication

Prototype revision requires direct feedback to the engineering team. Trading company intermediaries introduce delays, translation errors, and misaligned priorities at each round. Most OEM development programs that fail do so because of communication problems, not engineering problems.

What Goes Wrong

How OEM Programs Fail Without Direct Factory Access

The failure sequence for OEM and ODM programs routed through trading companies is predictable:

FirstDesign brief handed to a middleman with no engineering capability

Trading company receives the spec. No loom access, no engineering team. Requirement is forwarded to an unknown factory that may not specialize in your construction type.

ThenPrototype returned wrong — spec lost in each revision round

Prototype arrives using catalog construction, not your specified design. Each revision round adds 3–5 weeks and passes through the same communication bottleneck.

ResultIP unprotected — design appears in competitor’s range

No exclusivity agreement is enforceable at the trading company level. The factory supplies to multiple buyers. Your design appears in a competitor’s catalog within the season.

Development Process

How OEM and ODM Development Programs Work

Custom development programs follow a structured sequence from brief to production approval.

  1. 1

    Brief Submission and Feasibility Review

Submit your written brief, reference sample, or specification sheet. Our engineering team reviews feasibility — material sourcing, loom capability, construction requirements — and advises before quoting. If the program is feasible, we quote the development package. If not feasible as specified, we advise on what modifications would make it workable.

  2. 2

    NDA and Program Agreement

Before development begins, we sign an NDA covering your specification. For OEM programs, the exclusivity agreement is documented — confirming the construction and design will not be supplied to competing brands. Program terms, development package cost, and bulk MOQ are confirmed.

  3. 3

Prototype Development — Up to 3 Rounds

Development prototypes are produced and shipped for your review. Most programs require 2 rounds to reach production quality. You review against your specification and provide specific, documented revision notes for each round. Development package includes up to 3 rounds.

  4. 4

    Production Approval and Bulk Order

After written approval of the final prototype, bulk production terms are confirmed: MOQ, pricing, lead time, and supply terms. The approved prototype is retained as the production standard at our factory for all subsequent bulk runs.

FAQ

Questions About This Service

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): you own the design and bring it to us for manufacturing. We produce to your specification, and you retain IP rights. ODM (Original Design Manufacturer): we develop the design from your brief. You select a design from our development output and brand it as your own. We may retain the underlying construction IP unless you purchase it outright.

Yes, with a signed exclusivity agreement. We document your construction specification, identify it as your exclusive product, and agree not to supply the same construction to competing brands. This agreement is factory-level, enforceable because we control production directly. Trading companies cannot make this guarantee.

You provide specific revision notes on what needs to change (color, construction, weight, hand). We adjust and produce a second round. Up to 3 prototype rounds are included in the standard development package. After round 3, if the program is not approved, we review whether the issue is feasibility-based (requires specification adjustment) or execution-based.

Minimum: written description of the application, required properties, and approximate volume. Helpful: a reference sample of an existing product you’re trying to match or improve. Ideal: a full technical specification document. Contact us with whatever you have — we’ll advise on what additional information is needed for the feasibility review.
