Frequently Asked Questions — Custom Ribbon Sourcing

Answers to the most common questions B2B buyers ask before and during a custom ribbon program with Lude Ribbon. Organized by topic.

A — Buying & MOQ

MOQ is 1,500 yards (1,372 m) per color for plain stock ribbon and 3,000 yards (2,743 m) per design for custom printed ribbon. Pre-tied bows and flowers start at 1,000 pcs and ribbon construction. All print methods — hot stamp, silk screen, and digital — start at 3,000 yards (2,745 m) per design; jacquard woven logo ribbon starts at 3,000–5,000 yards (4,572 m). → See /services/moq-lead-time/ for the full MOQ table.

Standard lead time is 15–20 business days from artwork approval and order confirmation. Rush programs (5–8 business days) are available for surcharge and subject to capacity. → See /services/moq-lead-time/ for timeline breakdown.

Yes. Sample confirmation is a required step in all custom programs. A pre-production sample is produced for your approval of color, print, and construction before bulk production begins. Bulk production does not start until written sample approval is received.

The main pricing variables are: (1) material type; (2) print method; (3) ribbon width; (4) order quantity (volume tiering); (5) color program. Request a quotation with your program specs for a line-item breakdown.

B — Files & Artwork

Vector files are strongly preferred: AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS, or SVG with outlined text. PDF with embedded vector artwork is also accepted. For raster files: PNG or TIFF, minimum 300 DPI at actual print size. JPG files exported from web sources (72 DPI) are not suitable for print reproduction.

The four standard methods are: (1) Hot stamp — metallic foil pressed onto ribbon surface; (2) Screen print — ink-based print for solid-color logos; (3) Digital print — full-color, short-run, no screen fees; (4) Jacquard weave — logo woven into the ribbon structure for durability.

C — Materials & Quality

Standard material options: polyester satin, grosgrain (polyester), velvet, organza, metallic (metallic thread), nylon. Each material has different print compatibility, visual finish, and hand feel.

Satin ribbon has a smooth, reflective surface — it photographs well and communicates luxury. Grosgrain ribbon has a ribbed weave texture — it has body and durability, holds shape well on packages, and is the standard for award programs and badge ribbons.

Velvet ribbon is the primary choice for luxury cosmetics and fragrance — the matte finish and tactile weight communicate premium positioning. Satin ribbon is used for accessible luxury. Foil-printed velvet (hot stamp gold or silver logo) is the standard for the highest tier of beauty packaging.

D — Color & Consistency

All custom color programs use Pantone references as the production standard. A physical color sample is produced and approved before bulk dyeing. The approved sample dye lot is retained as the production standard and used for pre-shipment comparison.

The dye lot from the approved sample batch is retained and used as the color standard for pre-shipment inspection of the bulk order. Any deviation beyond agreed tolerance is addressed before dispatch. For ongoing supply programs, lot-to-lot color standards are maintained across production runs.

E — Application & Sourcing

For holiday gift programs: metallic gold and silver for Christmas; red and gold for Lunar New Year; red and pink for Valentine’s Day. Velvet ribbon for premium sets; satin ribbon for standard gift programs; metallic ribbon for visual impact on seasonal limited editions.

The main risks in seasonal ribbon sourcing: (1) Production slot availability — Q3/Q4 capacity fills early for Christmas programs; (2) Late artwork approval delaying production start; (3) Color deviation that requires a re-run; (4) Shipping delays against a fixed retail window. Confirm orders 3–5 months before the seasonal window to manage all four risks.

Pre-tied bows reduce labor time and packaging consistency risk in retail fulfillment and e-commerce operations. A pre-tied bow is applied in one step; a hand-tied bow requires skilled labor and produces inconsistent results at scale.
